Following our\ndisappointing loss to St Helens (2.5-3.5) and our opening day thrashing against\nthe A team (1-5) we faced Northwich on a cold dark wet Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driving in\nlashing rain with poor visibility is no fun, but the B team all arrived safely so\nwell done to everyone for their dedication to the cause \u2013 lets hope it was all\nworthwhile !!.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On to the\nmatch\u2026\u2026..  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both teams\nhad started their A division campaigns with 2 losses so this was an opportunity\nfor one of us to put points on the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bad start\nas we lost the toss and Northwich had white on odd boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the\ngames began\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Blood\nto Culcheth\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike\u2019s\nopponent decided he wanted to get home early (who can blame him) and generously\nallowed his knight to become isolated, unprotected and lost after only 8 moves\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game\nhad just gone 5\u2026.f6?! 6.Bh4 and now black followed up with 6\u2026g5?? Oh dear !!\n7.Nxg5 Bf5 ??? (Oh Dear twice) 8.Qxh5+<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My game was next to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling 120 miles from Teesside,\nworking all day and then travelling to Northwich in lashing rain is probably\nnot the best way to prepare for a chess game, so my play was less than\ninspiring and I found myself in a lost position very quickly !! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had just\nplayed 17\u2026h5 in a desperate attempt to get some play (Fritz has this position\nas +2.50)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play\ncontinued 18 Rc7 Bg4\u2026..white seemed  a\nbit perplexed by this move which was the whole point of h5 and started looking\na bit uneasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game\ncontinued 19.Ba7 Bxf3 20.gf3 Rd8 21.Rxd8 Bxd8 22.Rxb7 (Fritz has this +1.93).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazingly\nhere my opponent offered me a draw\u2026..mmm let me think\u2026.sometimes you just get\nlucky !!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t disappoint\nagainst Northwich courtesy of some very good play and an horrendous blunder by\nhis opponent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy had already\nsteadily built up a clear winning position (Fritz +4.5) so it looked like we\nmight have the game of the day\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.his opponent decided to blunder horribly\nwith 21\u2026.c4??? 22. Rxd5<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy soon mopped up the\nposition to give Culcheth a great start\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keith\nplayed very well throughout and always looked to have the better of his\nopponents Scandinavian Defence\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By this position Fritz already had Keith well ahead (+2.5) play continued\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crowds gathered around his board\nwith eager anticipation. When I joined Nick had 10 minutes left on his clock\nand his opponent 40 seconds !!!.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick demonstrated his won position\nefficiently \u2013 albeit I\u2019m sure he milked the crowd a bit !!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Count how many times the white knight\nlands on b3 \u2013 at the position below the knight had already visited this square 4\ntimes\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
